The Objective of IEC in the Water and Sanitation Sector

The use of contaminated water and open defecation are the major causes of malnutrition, child deaths, and communicable diseases in India. According to a 2008 UNICEF study, only 21% of rural households in the country have improved sanitation facilities, while 31% of rural households did not have toilets. In recent years, coverage of toilets has increased, but their use and stability remain at the nethermost. However, the efforts of the government, NGOs, and partner organizations have helped improve sanitation, safe water and sanitation conditions. The government has initiated reforms in the rural water supply and sanitation sector to strengthen community-based approaches for greater sustainability.

• To promote a mass media campaign that focuses on promoting personal responsibility and accountability towards the provision of toilets and safe drinking water.
• An IEC campaign brings awareness of various programs and activities of the government to create a demand for community participation.
• Children should be used as change agents for the aggregation of communities.
• To create awareness among rural communities about the relationship between personal and community sanitation, safe drinking water and better sanitation.
• To collect and share information among the general public to bring transparency in both approach and implementation in the field.

Bromine, like chlorine, is an inexpensive sanitizer and easy to use. Unlike chlorine, however, it does not have the smell of chlorine and does not evaporate at low temperatures. Bromine will lower the pH level, but pH readings will require more attention. Additionally, some bromine requires oxidants to activate their hygiene abilities.

Ozone is a non-chemical sanitizer. Unfortunately, ozone alone is not an effective enough sanitizer to keep spas healthy and is used along with any other sanitizer such as chlorine or bromine. Ozone will reduce the required amount of primary sanitizer, reducing the negative effects of that chemical. The most important drawback to ozone is the significant cost and the periodic need to replace the bulb. Additionally, ozone can be dangerous when used in indoor spas and therefore should not be used.

Another non-chemical sanitizer is a mineral cartridge. Mineral packs such as ozone can be used to assist but not to replace your primary sanitizer. Mineral cartridges can be placed inside your filter or fed through a floating dispenser. In addition, mineral packs are however significantly less expensive than ozone because sanitary boosts are still expensive and require periodic replacement.

It is important to remember that when considering ozone systems or mineral packs, there may be a start-up cost related to their use, which will save money on your primary sanitizer during your use.

Regardless of which sanitation method you choose, it is necessary to change your water periodically. The frequency will depend on your weight and the frequency of use of your spa but should usually occur every 2 to 3 months.
