• The use of contaminated water and open defecation are the major causes of malnutrition, child deaths, and communicable diseases in India. According to a 2008 UNICEF study, only 21% of rural households in the country have improved sanitation facilities, while 31% of rural households did not have toilets. In recent years, coverage of toilets has increased, but their use and stability remain at the nethermost. However, the efforts of the government, NGOs, and partner organizations have helped improve sanitation, safe water and sanitation conditions. The government has initiated reforms in the rural water supply and sanitation sector to strengthen community-based approaches for greater sustainability.

State governments are working hard to promote cleanliness through various methods and we can take the example of West Bengal which has achieved near 100% sanitation in some areas of the state.

"Sant Baba Gadge Yojana - Taking advantage of the traditional social equity of social reformer" is an incentive-driven strategy adopted by the Government of Maharashtra to deliver hygiene based messages.

    Programs related to rural sanitation:

    • Central Rural Sanitation Program - CRSP: 1986
    • Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC): 19 (Revised version of CRSP)
    • Nirmal Gram Puraskar '(NGP): 2003
    • TSC was renamed "Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan" (NBA, 2012).
    • Swachh Bharat Mission (Reorganization of Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan, 2 October 2014)

Since the inception of the Swachh Bharat Mission, sanitation is gaining momentum in India, although there is still a need to provide better sanitation facilities to half the population. So, time is required to study the awareness level and prevailing communication strategies used in the development of sanitation and hygiene among rural people. It is important to keep an eye on the purpose of information, education, communication (IEC) and to find strategies to address the hygiene behavior of people.

    The objective of IEC:

The basic objective of the IEC in rural sanitation is to create awareness that will increase the participation of the local community, especially at the rural level. The next objective of the IEC is to ensure skill up-gradation as well as motivation,

    • Panchayat Member
    • Line Department Officer
    • Village Sanitation and Water Committee (Pani Samiti member)
    • School teachers and students
    • Self-employed mechanics and masons

Apart from the above ones, the professionals in the field have to be sensitized to changes in role and responsibility with the help of need-based in-service training with the help of experts/experts.

    Objectives of the IEC Campaign:

    • A systematic and purpose-based IEC campaign produces effective results and brings accountability to programs. The availability and access to data, findings, lessons, reports, and experiences add great value and sharpness to the response of rural people.
    • To promote a mass media campaign that focuses on promoting personal responsibility and accountability towards the provision of toilets and safe drinking water.
    • An IEC campaign brings awareness of various programs and activities of the government to create a demand for community participation.
    • Children should be used as change agents for the aggregation of communities.
    • To create awareness among rural communities about the relationship between personal and community sanitation, safe drinking water and better sanitation.
    • To collect and share information among the general public to bring transparency in both approach and implementation in the field.
    • Focus areas of rural sanitation and IEC:
    • Construction and use of sanitary toilets
    • Water quality monitoring
    • Conservation of water and water storage along with management
    • Garbage Disposal Management
    • Basic Health and Hygiene

choosing the Right Sanitizer for Your Spa

Relaxing at the Hot Tub Spa is a wonderful experience and is available to more people than ever before. Spas and hot tubs are more affordable than ever to provide in more and more homes. It is important to pay attention to water hygiene in between relaxing in your hot tub or spa. Here are important tips about the most common hygiene methods to enjoy a healthy spa.

The most commonly used water sanitizer is chlorine. The primary benefit of chlorine is that it is commonly used in water treatment, it is very inexpensive and available anywhere. The disadvantages of chlorine are odor and it will evaporate at 95 degrees which is much lower than most spa operating temperatures. Also, do not confuse swimming pool chlorine-like Tri-Chlor or Cal-Hypo with Spa Chlorine. Only D-Chlor type chlorine should be used in your hot tub. Chlorine is a cost-effective, convenient, and very effective sanitizer.

Bromine is a close chemical relative of chlorine and an effective sanitizer for your hot tub. Bromine is available in tablet or granular forms in which tablets are most commonly used. Bromine, like chlorine, is an inexpensive sanitizer and easy to use. Unlike chlorine, however, it does not have the smell of chlorine and does not evaporate at low temperatures. Bromine will lower the pH level, but pH readings will require more attention. Additionally, some bromine requires oxidants to activate their hygiene abilities.

Ozone is a non-chemical sanitizer. Unfortunately, ozone alone is not an effective enough sanitizer to keep spas healthy and is used along with any other sanitizer such as chlorine or bromine. Ozone will reduce the required amount of primary sanitizer, reducing the negative effects of that chemical. The most important drawback to ozone is the significant cost and the periodic need to replace the bulb. Additionally, ozone can be dangerous when used in indoor spas and therefore should not be used.

Another non-chemical sanitizer is a mineral cartridge. Mineral packs such as ozone can be used to assist but not to replace your primary sanitizer. Mineral cartridges can be placed inside your filter or fed through a floating dispenser. In addition, mineral packs are however significantly less expensive than ozone because sanitary boosts are still expensive and require periodic replacement.

It is important to remember that when considering ozone systems or mineral packs, there may be a start-up cost related to their use, which will save money on your primary sanitizer during your use.

Regardless of which sanitation method you choose, it is necessary to change your water periodically. The frequency will depend on your weight and the frequency of use of your spa but should usually occur every 2 to 3 months.

Before deciding on a sanitizing method for your spa, you should consult with manufacturing recommendations and test the chemical balance of your hot tub to determine the appropriate recommendations. Regardless of your application, there is a sanitizer for your spa. We have given you an overview of the most commonly used methods and applications and hope you have found this information.
